Summer STEM Camps

Unfortunately, we had to make the tough decision to cancel all on-site camps during the month of June. However, we are excited to offer virtual experiences through Camp in a Box!

July camps will be running as scheduled. However, to following the guidelines of the Ohio Department of Health and Gov. Mike DeWine, the capacity for all on-site summer camps has been reduced to 9 campers. We appreciate your understanding as we aim to keep everyone safe and healthy this summer!

Jr. Scientist STEM Camps

Do you have an early elementary, kindergarten or preschool aged child who has a natural affinity for science and nature? Indulge their curiosity in our all new Jr. Scientist STEM Camps! For children ages 4 and 5, there are afternoon half-day camps, and for those a little older at 6 and 7, full day camps are offered.  
Ages 4 and 5: half day, 12:30pm-3:30pm: non-member$125/member$120
Ages 6 and 7:
full day, 8:30am-3:30pm: non-member$199/member$189

STEM Camps

Who knows STEM better than the Boonshoft? It’s our mission! From Astronomy to Zoology, your 8 to 11 year old will see the STEM in every discipline!
Ages 8 – 11: full day, 8:30am-3:30pm: non-member$199/member$189

STEM Adventures

For campers who are ready for advanced opportunities in STEM, these new STEM Adventures are the way to go! Designed for slightly older and advanced campers, these camps include advanced materials or day trips to enhance the area of STEM they are interested in the most.
Ages 10 – 14: full day, 8:30am-3:30pm: non-member$350/member$340

STEM Adventure camps with overnight experiences out of town! Topics will include Zoo Keeping, Astronomy and Geology. Full descriptions, pricing, and field trip locations to be released January 2021.

To qualify for the next level of STEM Adventures, campers will be required to have participated in a Summer 2020 STEM Adventure.


ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS

Please plan to provide your camper(s) with a peanut-free bagged lunch. Microwaves and refrigerators are not available, so please do not pack lunches that require heating, and pack perishable items with an ice pack.

The maximum attendance per camp is 20 students; minimum attendance per camp is 8.

All registrations for summer camps at the Boonshoft Museum are considered final and no refunds will be issued.
You may transfer your camper to a different camp for an additional $25 administrative fee. No transfers are permitted once your camp begins.
We reserve the right to cancel a program for any reason, but will issue a full refund in the event this occurs. You will be notified no later than the Friday before your camp begins.
STEM Camps at The Boonshoft Museum and SunWatch Indian Village are peanut free.

July 6 – 10

Jr. Scientists: Wild Kratts (repeat of June 1-5)
9 student maximum

Time to put your creature suits on Kratts Kids!  Earn your creature disks as we will travel through different animal habitats from around the globe and explore the animals that live there.  But watch out!  We may have to save a few animals on our adventures!  During this camp we will learn about animals from the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery’s Discovery Zoo and so much more! Dress as your favorite animal on Friday for a creature adventure! New animals and adventure for 2020!

Do you have a young camper interested in a career in animal care? Introduce them to the basics of the profession as they interact with a variety of animals found in the Boonshoft’s Discovery Zoo. Campers will learn more about natural habitats, special animal characteristics, and how the Discovery Zoo team cares for well over 100 different animals every day!

STEM Camp: First Kid on Mars
8:30am – 3:30pm
Ages 8 - 11
9 student maximum
Non Members $199 per week

After the first astronauts visit Mars, eventually there will be a colony there. If you were going to live on Mars for the rest of your life, how would you prepare? What would you bring? What would you look forward to doing on Mars? Campers will learn about the special equipment and techniques needed on Mars, design their habitat there, and envision life on another planet!

STEM Adventure: Outdoor Explorer
9 student maximum
8:30am – 3:30pm; Ages 10-14
Non Members $350 per week
Members $340 per week

Join the Boonshoft for Field School! Campers will learn what it takes to be a field researcher by being immersed in data collection and observation using real scientific tools and techniques. Topics covered include: aquatic biology, ornithology, entomology, botany, archaeology, and herpetology. Daily trips to new locations will occur to allow campers to compare and contrast a variety of habitats and the life living in each. The final day of camp will be held at SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park, located at: 2301 W River Rd. Dayton, OH 45417. Campers will need to be dropped off and picked up from this location. 

ATTENTION: This camp runs rain or shine except in the event of extreme heat or lightning. Campers will be outside the majority of the day and should be dressed accordingly; guidelines will be provided. Three of the five days will be spent at locations not within walking distance of the Museum.

July 13 – 17

Jr. Scientists: Build, Create, Move
9 student maximum
12:30pm – 3:30pm

Do you like to design, build, and fix things? Then this camp is for you! Learn what makes buildings strong, who nature’s best engineers are, and how things move. Put your thinking cap on and get ready to learn how things work!

Jr. Scientists: Coasters, Cars, and Collisions
8:30am – 3:30pm
Ages 6 - 7
9 student maximum

Learn the ins and outs of your favorite amusement park rides. Test your race car building skills! Push the limits of all your designs, set records, and build your own amusement park or racetrack while learning the physics and feats of engineering used to make these amazing rides and vehicles a reality.

STEM Camp: Zookeeping 101 (repeat of June 8-12)

Are you dreaming of a future career as a Zoo Keeper? This newly expanded full-day experience includes special opportunities like dissection and behavioral observations.  Participants will learn about general biology, nutrition, medicine, behavioral training, and exhibit design. The best part: each camper receives hands-on opportunities with the animals!

July 20 – 24

Jr. Scientists: Kids in Space
9 student maximum

Join us on a weeklong adventure as we travel straight to the Moon! More than fifty years after the original landing on the Moon, you will learn the science of how the first astronauts were able to make the trip.  You will explore the stars, learn what it takes to be an astronaut, and ultimately step foot on the Moon.

Did you know many of your favorite Pokémon characters are based on science?  Everyday take a look at two of your favorite Pokémon characters from the Red/Blue/Yellow series such as Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Pikachu.  At the end of camp create your very own Pokémon to show off to your friends and family.  It will be a shocking good time!

STEM Camp: Your Turn! The Board Game Camp
8:30am – 3:30pm

In this camp students will learn the different styles of board games.  It takes math, logic, and clever strategy to design the best board game. By the end of the week students will have built their own board game to take home!

STEM Adventure: Urban Astronomy
9 student maximum

Is your child interested in astronomy, but you live in the city? It turns out that there are plenty of ways to observe the sky despite light pollution. We will explore observing targets for both naked eye and binoculars: planets and the moon; bright stars and constellations; atmospheric phenomena like rainbows and sundogs; artificial satellites; and double stars and star clusters. The camp concludes with a late night stargazing experience at SunWatch Indian Village. There is so much to see, once you know what to look for!

Attention: This camp runs Wednesday, July 22 to 12 am Saturday, July 25. Wednesday and Thursday are normal 8:30am to 3:30pm hours. Drop off on Friday is at 8:30am. Campers will need to be transported to SunWatch Indian Village located at 2301 W River Road Dayton, OH 45417 at the conclusion of the regular camp day at 3:30pm for the late night experience. One adult may stay with the camper to experience a special SunWatch tour, launch rockets built earlier in the week, and learn how to use telescopes and view objects in the night sky until 12am. Snacks and dinner will be provided for each participant.

Jr. Scientists: Kids save the World

You are the next generation tasked with saving the world! Learn about modern problems like plastic in our oceans, air pollution, and climate change. Explore potential solutions to these problems and brainstorm ways to save our world.

STEM Camp: Wizard Science
8:30am – 3:30pm

Members $189 per week

Grab your cloaks and get ready for a magical and scientific journey through the wizard world! Explore potions, care for animals, make wands, duel, and learn astronomy.  This will be a magical week!
